Mini-Series: Reshaping A Foot / by Frederik van den Berg

'Tis the season to submit to photography competitions and grants, and I realized I don't have much from 2015 which hasn't already been submitted (or was commercial work). So I trawled through my archive and have uncovered several project ideas which either never panned out, or were just a nice thought.

I started 2015 on the right foot- mostly because the left one was broken and in a cast. For the first three months of the year I couldn't walk, and I'm still working on fixing the ankle to this day. Since I couldn't get out much, I was stuck photographing the evolution of my swollen foot.

These were shot with my phone, a Samsung S3.

From the point I could hobble with gusto and felt confident in my arms carrying me, I started practicing walking in the snow with crutches. I wanted to get out and shoot something, so at each opportunity I would put my camera and crutches into the back of my dad's car and drive around through the night.

From those nightly trips I managed to put together the series "Schweizer Nachtlandschaften II", which was a finalist in the VFG Nachwuchsförderpreis (along with a second series from Korea, "Follow The Yellow Dotted Line").

I recently started venturing out into the night again, for a third round of the series. Stay tuned by following one of my social profiles below.
